A 13-year-old has been arrested after allegedly making threats on a social media app to shoot up a school in Ontario.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to a house in Oshawa around 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 31 after an individual reported receiving a school-related threat through Snapchat.
Investigators say a 13-year-old sent messages to multiple people, saying that Pierre Elliott Trudeau Public School, located at 1111 Beatrice St. E., was going to get “shot up.”
Officers did not say whether the individuals who received the threat or the suspect were students at the elementary school, which teaches Kindergarten to Grade 8.
A 13-year-old was later taken into police custody. In addition, Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the suspect’s identity is protected, as the law prohibits releasing a young person’s name.
Police added that they take all threats to school safety very seriously and conduct thorough investigations to protect students, staff and the community.
