Trees planted by volunteers at a park in an Ontario community west of Toronto were uprooted by vandals during the Mother’s Day weekend.

The Town of Halton Hills says 150 trees were ripped out of the ground in a park in the community of Acton. The vandals struck just days after the trees were planted by a not-for-profit community group created to tackle climate change and preserve the area’s natural environment.

In Wallace Park, the volunteers with Trees for Halton Hills planted approximately 150 young, potted trees on May 8, but by Mother’s Day three days later, the trees had been ripped out.

Nearby residents have since joined with Tree for Halton Hills to try and save the trees by replanting them. Officials are hoping that most of them all be able to take root.
