Ontario’s police watchdog says a 16-year-old boy shot by Toronto police during a traffic stop has died in hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit says the teen is from Toronto but did not release his name. It initially referred to him as a man.

The SIU says police stopped a car near Sheppard Avenue and Bathurst Street around 11 p.m. on Sunday night for a traffic infraction.

The SIU says police shot the boy in an “exchange of gunfire,” but offered no further details about the shooting or how the situation escalated.

They say two officers fired their guns.

Police had previously said no officers were injured.
