20 vote victory margin triggers request for recount in Mississauga provincial riding [Video]

Now that the results have been made official, steps are being taken to conduct a recount in the hotly contested riding of Mississauga-Erin Mills.

With all the ballots counted following last week’s provincial election, just 20 votes separate Progressive Conservative Sheref Sabawy (16,665 votes) from Liberal candidate Qasir Dar (votes).

Under the terms of the Election Act, if a margin of victory is fewer than 25 votes, the Returning Officer for the riding must apply for a judicial recount. That has been done. Now it is up to a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice to determine if a recount will take place.

If the judge agrees, the recount must take place within 10 days.

And if that happens, the recount will be carried out manually without the use of electronic devices that were in place on election day.
