2003 junior hockey team sex assault investigation ongoing: Halifax police

Halifax police say they are investigating claims against the 2003 World Junior Hockey Team for allegations of sexual assault just one day after five members of the 2018 were reportedly ordered to surrender to police in London.

Police in Halifax say they are still gathering evidence, speaking with people who have may information and looking for ways to advance the investigation.

Officers involved say the historic nature of the allegations make the investigation more complex, but there’s no statute of limitations on this kind of charge.

The incident under investigation allegedly happened in Halifax during the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships.

This comes just a day after the Globe and Mail reported that five members of the 2018 team have been told to surrender to London police and are facing sexual assault charges.

The same week, five former 2018 players were granted leaves of absence from their professional hockey clubs. Many of them now play for the NHL, though there’s no information that connects them to the charges.

No charges have been filed in court against members of the 2018 team at this time.

London police say they will provide an update on the investigation, given the significant public interest, on Feb. 5.
