BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – 2,600 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged in Brunswick County on March 19, according to Brunswick County Public Utilities.
The sanitary sewer overflow was caused by damage to the collection system from construction at New Penny Lane on Ocean Isle Beach. Workers estimated they recovered 1,700 gallons, but nearly 900 gallons reached a stormwater pond structure connected to Saw Pit Swamp.
The swamp has already been through remediation and downstream sampling following the spill.
Staff were alerted to the overflow at around 8:50 a.m. and saw the damage was to a low-pressure force main during an internet service line installation. At 10:30 a.m., they completed the repair.
