RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – This past week, the 47th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational brought thousands to KOTA Territory, highlighting Native American culture, athletics and education.

The basketball tournament is the main event, which attracts teams from all across the country.

But, the LNI also included other sports, as well as various academic, art, language and business competitions.

Rapid City Sports Commission’s Executive Director Domico Rodriguez says that above all, it is a cultural event that strengthens the bonds between Native and non-Native communities.

“Bryan Brewer, the founder, has said, reconciliation, we are trying to move forward, we want to obviously recognize what has happened in the past, but also build those friendships and bonds moving forward, and it’s a great opportunity to do that in our community, and we’re just thankful to be a part of it,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez says the LNI will continue to grow throughout the years.
