Police are investigating what they describe as a hate-motivated incident after several vehicles and a mosque were vandalized in the community of Orono, in Clarington, just east of Toronto.

Durham Regional Police say officers were called to 111 Church Street North around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of damage to seven vehicles and the front door of the mosque.

Investigators did not specify the nature of the vandalism or provide details about why the incident is being considered hate-motivated.

In a news release on Sunday, police acknowledged the impact of the vandalism on the local Muslim community and said the incident is being taken seriously.

“We understand the fear and anxiety such events can create, and we want to reassure everyone that we are taking this matter seriously,” the statement said.

No suspect descriptions or surveillance images have been released at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
