Booing the U.S. national anthem has become the norm at sporting events in Canada but a majority of people polled don’t support the practice.

Sports fans started booing after U.S. President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods and repeatedly referred to Canada becoming a 51st state. The tariffs were implemented on Tuesday with a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy.

The U.S. anthem was booed at the Raptors game in early February and at hockey games including the 4 Nations Face-Off. Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk changed the lyrics of O Canada from “in all of us command” to “that only us command,” before Canada beat the U.S. at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

This weekend at the Rogers Centre WWE Elimination Chamber event the crowd erupted into “overwhelming” booing during a performance of The Star Spangled Banner.
