“Lovely day,” I say to a fellow grandmother sitting on a bench in Toronto’s Sibelius Park. The toddlers run from here to there, delirious over a ball or shovel, the paradise of a puddle. It’s a clear March afternoon, and I’ve turned my face up to the warming sun.

“Yes, it’s concerning,” the other grandmother replies, with a stern look at the sun.
