Former Quebec premier Jean Charest spoke at Brian Mulroney’s state funeral on Saturday, saying the former prime minister’s economic policies shaped Canada and the world beyond.

Charest celebrated Mulroney’s Conservative overhaul of Canada’s economy, including the introduction of the country’s national sales tax.

Moreover, Charest fondly remembered Mulroney’s character, noting the former prime minister “treated his political opponents with respect” and didn’t “view them as enemies.”

Mulroney and Charest served at the federal level at the same time, with Mulroney as prime minister and Charest as a member of Parliament. The pair were also friends.
