“Axe the Tax” protesters urge Trudeau to hold referendum on carbon tax | FULL [Video]

Representatives of the “Axe the Tax” movement in Canada, opposed to the federal government’s pollution pricing plan, spoke in Ottawa on Thursday amid ongoing demonstrations across the country.

Speakers Karl Douville and Robert Dorion called for a public referendum on the issue of pollution pricing, and specifically on the pollution pricing plan put in place by the Trudeau government.

The specific parameters of this proposed referendum were not made clear at this time by the protesters, nor whether such a referendum would have legal weight under Canadian law.

Elected officials previously defeated a Conservative motion to stop the April 1 carbon price increase in the House of Commons. Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre had introduced the motion in an attempt to stop the annual carbon price increase.

This press conference comes as the Canadian government’s planned $15-per-tonne increase in the federal consumer carbon price came into effect earlier this week.

Douville was previously involved in the “Freedom Convoy” movement, which occupied parts of Ottawa in protest of the Liberal government.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has long insisted that the federal carbon price plan will put more money in Canadian’s pockets, while fighting climate change. Some provinces have called on the federal government to cancel the hike because of the affordability crisis.
