P.E.I. Premier Dennis King faced questions from Official Opposition Leader Hal Perry in the legislature Tuesday in what was, at times, a heated exchange over long-term care funding.

For the second time this month, questions in the P.E.I. Legislature about plans to fund new long-term care beds in the private sector have led to sharp words between Premier Dennis King and members of the opposition.

Last week, it was Green MLA Peter Bevan-Baker who drew the premier’s ire with questions about accountability for how the long-term care operators would spend the government’s money. On Wednesday, Opposition Leader Hal Perry went a step further, questioning whether the province should be investing in private beds at all.

“This do-nothing government waited around until a crisis clearly emerged, and then they turned over all the responsibility to the private sector. Now, it’s relying on the profit motive to solve their problems,” said Perry.
