It took resiliency and flexibility, but Maryanne Oketch used her skills and ambition to win season 42 of the hit TV series, Survivor.

Now, she’s studying medicine at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in London, the same city her family first moved to when they immigrated to Canada. Just last year, she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a doctor. 

The former children’s pastor is the second Black woman to win the $1 million prize on the hit reality TV show. She competed in 2021 while working on her master’s degree with her season airing in 2022. 

CBC’s Josiah Sinanan spoke with Oketch on Afternoon Drive.
