NBC’s Saturday Night Live is back, kicking off its 50th season tonight (10:30 p.m. Saturday Sept. 28 on NBC/Global). That’s two weeks before the theatrical première of the big-screen Saturday Night, Jason Reitman’s new movie about the 1974 birth of that juggernaut of a show. (Reviews of the film are mostly good.)

Back on network TV, SNL will mark its 50th anniversary with a “celebratory weekend” capped by a live prime-time special on Sunday, Feb. 16. But for now, feast your eyes on this not-too-shabby list of hosts and music guests: Jean Smart and Jelly Roll tonight; Nate Bargatze and Coldplay Oct. 5; Ariana Grande and Stevie Nicks Oct. 12; Michael Keaton and Billie Eilish Oct. 19; and John Mulaney and Chappell Roan Nov. 2.
