Names released in September fatal McCook Co. crash [Video]

MCCOOK COUNTY, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A Lennox man has been identified as the victim of a fatal Sept. 19 crash in McCook County.

According to authorities, a 2022 GMC Yukon driven by Samuel R. Wipf of Parkston was traveling west on SD Highway 42 near the intersection of 451st Avenue.

A 2002 Ford Ranger driven by Billy Joe Poppenga of Lennox was traveling south on 451st Avenue and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with SD 42.

The vehicles collided upon entering the intersection.

Wipf and the three passengers of the Yukon received minor injuries.

Mr. Poppenga sustained life-threatening injuries and passed away from his injuries on Oct. 1.

The passenger of the Ranger, Penny Sue Poppenga, sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
