FORT ST. JOHN — The evening sky gave the North a show last night. The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, could be seen in areas of the region.

Dawson Creek, Chetwynd and Fort St. John residents shared their views on social media.

The lights occur when electrically charged particles are released from the sun. When they reach Earth they hit the top layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Those collisions then produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light.

The lights are expected to be visible again tonight.
