The eight biggest movie theater chains in the U.S. and Canada — including AMC and Regal —  will invest $2.2 billion to make upgrades.

Just in time for peak horror film season, the Port of Fear Film Festival’s 5 Minute Horrors student challenge is set to kick off Friday Oct. 18, at Backyard Dream Productions.

The event challenges students to break off into their own teams and create their own horror, science fiction, fantasy or thriller films, in only 48 hours.

The free challenge starts at 6 p.m. at Backyard Dream Productions, 5800 Seventh Ave., where students will meet with professional filmmaker mentors for two hours before they are told the name, prop and line that must be used in their film.

Food and beverages are provided at the kickoff event, and parents and teachers are welcome to attend.
