ATMORE, Ala. (WALA) – To celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, the Poarch Creek Indians are highlighting their Mvskoke Language Program.

The second Monday in October is Indigenous People’s Day which celebrates the history and culture of the Native Americans.

The Poarch Creek Indians is the only federally recognized tribe in Alabama. The Mvskoke language is endangered with few speakers left. The Calvin McGhee Cultural Department’s Creek Language Program was started in 2021. The program also teaches tribal hymn classes for their senior population.
