16-year-old charged with driving 174 km/h on busy Ontario highway [Video]

A 16-year-old has been charged with stunt driving after police pulled over a vehicle that was travelling at nearly 80 km/h over the speed limit on a busy southern Ontario highway Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said an officer on speed enforcement duty spotted a speeding car on Highway 401 near Cobourg just before 10:30 a.m. The vehicle was clocked at 174 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone in the westbound lanes, police added.

The car was subsequently pulled over by police and the driver was charged.

A 16-year-old from Port Hope, a short distance west of Cobourg, has been charged with drive motor vehicle — perform stunt excessive speed. Police didn’t say if the driver is male or female.

The teen will appear in court at a future date. They had their licence suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was impounded for two weeks, police said.
