NDN Collective say President Bidens apologies are a good start but more needs to be done for Native people [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – President Joe Biden traveled to the Gila Crossing Community School in Arizona Friday to make his historic apology to Indigenous people on behalf of the U.S. government. The apology is for the government’s role in running hundreds of Indian boarding schools over a 150-year period that stripped Native children of their language and their culture.

On the local front, NDN collective held a media conference featuring local leaders and boarding school survivors to discuss what this apology means to them. Survivor Daryl No Heart spoke about how the boarding schools took him away from his family and says this apology isn’t enough.

“When I shared my story, I hear all of these apologies and nothing has changed in my life because ‘Where’s my mother?’ She’s not here. I lost her when I was young because they wanted to civilize us and to be like them. So I’m sorry, it’s not enough,” No Heart said.
