An education campaign to reduce 911 wait times was launched by Toronto police and Mayor Olivia Chow on Monday.
The initiative, titled Make the Right Call, is meant to guide the public in determining whether to contact emergency or non-emergency lines.
Deputy Chief of Police Lauren Pogue said that the campaign is being launched in response to a 2022 report from Toronto’s auditor general, which found that the city’s emergency call centre was failing to meet minimum response time standards.
During the morning press conference at Toronto police headquarters, Chow said about three out of every 10 calls to 911 do not constitute emergencies, adding to emergency response delays.
