RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Axe throwing is a sport with a long history, often dating back to the middle ages where throwing axes were used in battles and war. As weapons evolved axes found themselves at the center of friendly competition. Legend has it some of the first axe throwing competitions were created by North American frontiersmen.

Modern-day axe throwing is credited to the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL). BATL was created by some friends in Canada who made a competition of throwing axes at a stump in their backyard, since then the sport has continued to grow and move across North America.

In the Black Hills, modern axe throwing is a relatively new sport, with only one business in Rapid City offering axe throwing to the public. Axe it Out was founded five years ago after Owner and Head Axepert Jeremy Boehrns tried axe throwing in Sioux Falls.
