Historically, the United States has reprimanded and “punished” other countries for human rights and “humane treatment” violations. Typically, our government withholds funds and/or weaponry until compliance is met, in addition to a public scolding.

Ironically, the U.S. has committed such grievous offenses (and, worse) since before the inception of our country: slave trade/slavery; forced Indigenous People religious conversion, particularly, in southwest missions; mandated Indian Boarding Schools; Japanese Internment Camps; discrimination of Chinese citizens (e.g., Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Reentry Certificates, Scott Act of 1888), to cite some examples.

Recently, Trump named Tom Homan as “Border Czar” to oversee mass deportations. Of concern is the accuracy and humanity with which this policy will be carried out. Who, exactly, will be considered as “illegal”? What toll will be exacted on those who are “rounded up”?
