A fire at an apartment building in Longueuil’s Saint-Hubert borough on Montreal’s South Shore forced dozens of people into the streets early Friday morning.

Longueuil firefighters say the blaze started in the basement unit of a 32-apartment building on Edouard Boulevard near des Émeraudes Street at 3 a.m.

The unit is a total loss, according to the department.

The reason behind the fire remains unknown, but the person living in the unit was not present when firefighters arrived.

There were no reported injuries.

Residents who were forced from their homes have been allowed to return inside.
