Comments on all social media accounts belonging to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are being disabled, the police service says, citing safety concerns.

The comments section will only be open for the public to provide input on posts about missing persons or matters of public safety, the OPP told CTV News Ottawa in a statement Friday.

“Recently, we have observed an increase in comments containing hate, misogyny, and abuse,” the OPP said in the statement.

Police note that the new changes come as an effort to prioritize the well-being of the community they serve by fostering an all inclusive and respectful environment that reflects the service’s values and culture.

“Thank you, for your support, as we work toward creating a safe space for everyone.”
