The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is working to alert the public of the dangers of avian influenza after waterfowl in the area tested positive.

WECHU posted on social media, saying they have been in talks with Wings Rehab Centre about handling and caring for the infected birds.

The health unit said there is no confirmed transmission to humans related to the three positive cases in Windsor-Essex. It added that the risk of avian influenza is low for humans, but transmission between infected animals and humans is possible.

Wings Rehab Centre made a post, saying they will continue to take in waterfowl, but a strict protocol will be in place to keep everyone involved safe.

Residents are asked to take precaution when interacting with wild and domestic birds, livestock or other animals.

If you see an animal that looks sick, you should notify animal control immediately.
