Two people have lost their lives following a collision in Saint-Hyacinthe. The life of a third person is still at stake, says the Provincial police (SQ).

Officers were called around 3:30 p.m. to Rang Saint-André, also known as Route 235. The head-on collision occurred on a stretch of road with a slight curve. The roadway was icy.

A total of five people were involved in the crash. One vehicle was occupied by a lone woman, while the other was carrying a man, an adult woman, and two children.

The driver of the more heavily occupied vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a woman believed to be in her forties, died in hospital. One of the two children was seriously injured and remains in critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The area was closed to all traffic to allow investigators to reconstruct the scene. A detour is in place.
