Police have identified the man killed in a New Year’s Eve shooting inside an Oshawa apartment building.

Durham Regional Police responded to a call for gunshots at 1040 Cedar Street, north of Wentworth Street West, at approximately 2 p.m. and found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, investigators identified the victim as 29-year-old Oshawa resident Dennis Binda. He is the city’s 11th homicide victim of 2024.

No suspect description has been released, but police say they believe the shooting was isolated and there is no risk to public safety.

“We’re all upset that this has occurred,” acting Insp. Craig McCabe told reporters at the scene.

“It’s supposed to be a joyous time of the year, and we’re here, unfortunately, investigating the 11th deceased party of the year within Durham Region.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information to the Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 x 5411 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
