A harsh winter storm bringing bone-chilling cold and snow across a wide band of the central U.S. on Sunday also triggered warnings about travel in Virginia, a state of emergency in Richmond and various cancellations and delays statewide.
About 63 million people in the U.S. were under some kind of winter weather advisory, watch or warning on Sunday, according to Bob Oravec with the National Weather Service. About a dozen states were in the zone of the powerful storm, the product of Arctic air from Canada.
Eswar Iyer, a meteorologist with the weather service in Wakefield, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Sunday evening that 2 to 3 inches of snow and sleet were possible in Richmond overnight.
