The Ontario government is launching a new energy efficiency rebate program in a bid to incentivize homeowners to retrofit their homes.

The province announced the Home Renovation Savings Program on Tuesday, which is set to launch on Jan. 28.

“As the demand for electricity continues to rise, we’re giving families and small businesses more ways to save money and energy as we launch the largest energy efficiency program in Canadian history,” Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said.

The Independent Electricity System Operator forecasts that demand for electricity will rise by 75 per cent by 2050, which is equivalent to four and a half cities the size of Toronto, the government said.

The jump in demand stems from the province’s increasing population, new manufacturing facilities, technology like AI data centres, the electrification of industry, and electric vehicle charging, the government said.
