61-year-old pedestrian killed in Vancouver Island crash [Video]

A pickup truck struck and killed a pedestrian in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island late last week, police said in an appeal for witnesses and video.

According to B.C. Highway Patrol, the crash happened on dark and rainy Jan. 3 just after 7 a.m. when the truck travelling south hit the pedestrian as he was crossing Highway 19 at Northwest Bay Road.

The victim is described as a 61-year-old man from Nanoose Bay.

Police say the driver “stopped immediately” and is co-operating with the investigation, and impairment or “overt criminality” were not apparent.

“Multiple witnesses to the collision also stopped and did what they could for the pedestrian and to assist police,” Mounties wrote in a news release Wednesday.

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash or has dash camera video to call B.C. Highway Patrol’s Parksville division at 250-954-2953.
