Here is what the speed cameras look like.

Speeders beware. Photo radar cameras are coming to Oakville streets later this month.

After some delay, the automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras will be set up to snap pictures of vehicles travelling above the speed limit. Jan. 20 has been announced as the launch date.

The offending vehicle owners will then be issued a ticket through the mail.

Generally, fines can reach as high as $588 for those going almost 50 km/h over the speed limit but most penalties are in the $80 to $90 range, according to provincial data. The tickets will not be reflected in the driving record and will not impact the vehicle insurance.

The program, which is gaining popularity across Ontario, is used by municipalities to slow drivers down in areas that have been determined to be places where casualties can occur including schools, parks and facilities used by seniors also known as community safety zones.
