Heavy and blowing snow advisory in effect for parts of southern Ontario [Video]

A winter weather travel advisory has been issued for parts of southern Ontario with heavy and blowing snow on the way for Thursday.

Reduced visibility for drivers will also be part of the potential danger, officials at Environment and Climate Change Canada (formerly Environment Canada) said in issuing the advisory just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The travel advisory is in effect for the Niagara Region — including Niagara Falls, Welland, St. Catharines and Fort Erie — and then southwest of that area, capturing Haldimand and Norfolk counties including communities on the northern shores of Lake Erie (see map below).

Hazards to expect, according to the weather agency, include “reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

Accumulations of snow in the area of five to 10 cm are expected, with peak snowfall rates of two to four centimetres per hour.
