How scammers are stealing millions from immigrants moving to Ontario [Video]

As immigrants coming to Ontario too often get scammed out of their life savings, cybersecurity authorities are scrambling to stop it. 

Last year, the Ontario government announced its plan to safeguard newcomers against an underground economy of fraudsters who target provincial immigration channels. Authorities say scammers pose as immigration representatives and target individuals moving through the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP). 

“Struggling to navigate a confusing federal immigration system, many newcomers put their trust in immigration representatives – many of whom are diligent and honest, but a few bad actors exploit vulnerable newcomers, jeopardizing their immigration status and scamming them out of tens of thousands of dollars,” said Ontario Immigration Minister David Piccini at a press conference last November

As a result of online predatory behaviour, Piccini announced plans to draft a new policy that would create revised standards and harsher penalties on those who would exploit the Canadian immigration system.
