Eight people have been taken to hospital, including seven students, after a crash involving a school bus in Ontario on Monday, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said that it happened in the northbound lane of Highway 69 in Sudbury.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m.

The collision involved a school bus and a commercial motor vehicle, police said.

The driver and 12 students were on the bus at the time, OPP said.

“Eight people were transported to the local hospital by EMS – five students as a precaution, two students received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, while the bus driver received serious life-threatening injuries,” police said.

No injuries were reported among the other students or the other driver.

There is no word on what may have caused the crash.

Highway 69 is closed in the area as officers investigate.
