Chrystia Freeland, the former finance minister running to succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister, said on Monday that Canada should release a “retaliation list” of American goods to target if U.S. President Donald Trump makes good on his threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian products.

Why It Matters

Trump has vowed to slap both Mexica and Canada with steep tariffs beginning next month, which would upend the U.S.’s trade relationship with both its neighbors.

The president claims the tariffs won’t affect Americans, but most economists disagree and say U.S. consumers could end up paying a significant price for Trump’s tariffs.

The Washington Post also published a lengthy report last October detailing how, if implemented, Trump’s tariff plan could be disastrous for the U.S. economy, with American consumers bearing the brunt of the cost.
