A 22-year-old woman, a former student in Brampton, is believed to have died after being caught by a wave and swept into the ocean off the coast of Newfoundland.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the incident occurred on Jan. 15 when Sandeep Kaur and a friend visited Cape Spear near the province’s capital of St. John’s.

According to reports, Kaur and a male companion were walking along the rocky coast when a wave hit and knocked her into the ocean. It is believed her friend jumped into the cold North Atlantic waters to try to save her.

Several rescue teams searched the area but she could not be found.

Signs posted at Cape Spear warn of the hazardous conditions near the shoreline.
