Liquor stores across British Columbia are complying with the provincial government’s directive to stop selling alcohol from U.S. states governed by Republicans.

A viral image circulating on Reddit shows a “Buy Canadian Instead” sign in a B.C. liquor store placed in front of now-empty shelves where U.S. liquor brands were once stocked after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered tariffs on Canadian goods.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment.

Why It Matters

British Columbia’s decision to stop purchasing liquor from Republican-led U.S. states marks an escalation of sorts in Canada’s response to American trade policies.

The measure follows Trump’s executive order imposing a 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports, a move the White House claims is necessary to counter the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
