Brunswick County reports lowered absentee student rates despite a statewide increase [Video]

BOLIVIA, N.C. (WECT) – A new statewide education report card shows students are lagging behind when it comes to reading skills.

It’s a problem school officials say could be fixed if more students were in the classroom.

Student attendance has been an issue for years and it’s a problem school districts here deal with now. That is except for schools in Brunswick County.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as students missing more than 10% of school days.

This is an issue Brunswick County Schools has struggled with as well. But, changes made at the county level have had an impact on the classroom.

“Making sure we have those clear expectations for when parents had to document those absences, and how, and communicating that widely to families so that we can then better document what was happening when students were absent,” said Maggie Rollison, principal of South Brunswick High School on the types of changes made to prevent chronic absenteeism.
