Hundreds prep for MMIR Day of Remembrance [Video]

MINNEAPOLIS — Hundreds of people are gearing up for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Day of Remembrance by screen printing shirts to stand in solidary with impacted families.

People lined up inside the Minnesota Indian Women’s Center to get bandanas, hoodies, and shirts screen printed for free ahead of a one-mile march on Friday.

“We have to be a united front. We have to be a community that comes together and shows up for families,” said Ana Negrete, the interim director of Minnesota’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office (MMIR).

MMIR provided services and resources for 28 families whose relatives were missing or were murdered, according to the organization.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s Missing Person’s Clearinghouse, Indigenous women account for less than 1% of Minnesota’s population but account for 10% of the state’s missing women.
