Carney leads in fundraising as Freeland says Liberal party undercounted her haul [Video]

Chrystia Freeland’s Liberal leadership campaign is insisting that fundraising numbers released today don’t give an accurate picture of her haul in the first part of the race.

Data released today by Elections Canada shows she raised just over $226,000, putting her behind candidates Karina Gould, Frank Baylis and Mark Carney but ahead of candidate Ruby Dhalla.

But Freeland campaign spokesperson Katherine Cuplinskas says the campaign actually has raised more than $600,000.

She says the Liberal party has not yet remitted some contributions the Freeland camp collected through direct donations to the party over the financial reporting period — which would mean hundreds of thousands of dollars were not captured in today’s numbers.

Carney is still dominating the fundraising field, having raised $1.9 million since the race began.

The next batch of fundraising data will land just a few days ahead of the vote on March 9.
