Fake carjacking leads to fraud charges for pair from Ontario [Video]

Charges including fraud and public mischief have been laid after what police say was a fake carjacking in Caledon.

The report came in on Jan. 9 shortly after 11:30 p.m. about an alleged carjacking on Mayfield Road east of Mississauga Road in Caledon, the OPP says.

Few details have been released by investigators but police now say an investigation revealed the incident was “a false carjacking.”

Police say two people from Georgetown were arrested and charged as a result of the staged robbery.

The OPP says Gurjant Singh, 28, of Georgetown has been charged with public mischief, obstruct peace officer, and fraud over $5,000. Manjinderpal Manjinderpal Singh, 22, of Georgetown has been charged with public mischief and obstruct peace officer.

Both of the accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on March 6.
