Threat of local flooding prompts warning to avoid rivers, streams in Mississauga [Video]

Mississauga residents are urged to keep their children and pets away from the Credit River and other watercourses as large amounts of melting snow and ice are expected to create potentially dangerous conditions due to heightened water levels.

With daytime temperatures warming up to 4 C on Monday and expected to stay above zero through Thursday, the huge amounts of snow and ice that have collected in neighbourhoods, parks and on rivers and streams — in addition to Lake Ontario — due to recent heavy snowfalls will quickly melt in many places, City of Mississauga officials say.

As a result, “localized minor flooding and/or river ice breakup may occur. Keep family and pets away from all watercourses,” officials said in a post to social media Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Mississauga and Brampton, issued a flood outlook statement Monday morning.
