Special weather statement in effect in the GTA and southern Ontario [Video]

Up to 25 mm of rain could hit southern Ontario on Tuesday with a special weather statement saying to expect “significant” precipitation in Mississauga, Toronto and across the province.

Environment Canada says the weather is expected to hit on Tuesday evening with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The rainfall and melting snow may lead to localized flooding in low lying areas and water pooling on roads, the agency says.

There’s between 10 mm to 20 mm of rain expected in the GTA while up to 25 mm could fall in areas east of Toronto like Peterborough and Kingston.

Environment Canada says to be cautious on the roads, and the special weather statement is expected to be in place until Wednesday.
