BUFFALO, N.Y. — On Monday, there was retaliation from Canada for President Trump’s tariff policy as the trade war between the two nations escalated.

But 2 On Your Side found out there is a lot of confusion about the exact numbers and what it really means for us as utility ratepayers.

Premier Ford made it official at a Monday morning press conference saying, “We’re moving forward with a 25% surcharge on electricity exports.”

Ford went on to say that for 1.5 million homes and businesses in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, the impact cost will be $400,000 per day. However, the actual impact is hard to gauge, as Ford was asked how that compares to the overall tariffs and economic impact, which could reach billions of dollars for Canada and the U.S. due to President Trump’s 25 percent tariffs. They are now scheduled for April 2 with more possible retaliation.
