ENFIELD — President Donald Trump proposed tariffs on Canadian lumber. While the extra cost is likely to fall on consumers, the impact on the industry remains unclear.  

“The minute the word tariffs was mentioned, it was as if the tariffs were in place,” said, Rita Ferris,  President of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association. “The price of building materials went up immediately.”  

On Friday, 24 hours after pausing tariffs on Canada, Trump made remarks threatening Canada with a tariff of up to 250 percent on lumber.    

President of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association, Rita Ferris, said these comments from the president have affected prices.  

“Just the talk of tariffs is having the same effect as actually having the tariffs,” Ferris said.  

Not everyone in the lumber industry, however, felt the impact of lumber prices is negative.
