KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — After President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs against Canada and Mexico, farmers in East Tennessee and across the United States were concerned that prices would rise and impact their businesses.

Around 85% of the fertilizer used by farmers comes from Canada and a 25% tariff could result in higher costs for farmers in East Tennessee. Some were still working to recover after Hurricane Helene destroyed their crops and their land.

On March 6, Trump signed an executive order that excluded products traded under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement from the previously announced 25% tariffs. Those products include many types of fertilizer. He also said potash products, often used to boost plant growth, would face a smaller 10% tariff instead of the 25% tariff other products faced.
