SEYMOUR, Wis. (WBAY) – Elders who are part of Wisconsin’s 11 tribes are getting access to nutritious food thanks to a program that works with local farmers.

The Tribal Elder Food Box program started in 2021, and since that time more than 94,000 food boxes have been distributed.

They’re filled with high-quality protein, fresh produce and other items, and are handed out every two weeks at the reservations’ food distribution programs.

Skenandore Farm in Seymour is one of the farms that contributes to the boxes, supplying ground beef and chicken.

“As an indigenous farmer on the reservation, we take pride in taking care of our elders,” Isaiah Skenandore said, “so to grow and raise high quality protein and get it into the Elder Box program is something we take a lot of pride in.”

More than 60 small-scale farms produce food for the Tribal Elder Food Boxes.
