An “explosive substance” was found at a residential highrise building in Ontario on Monday, police say.

Hamilton police said officers were called to 181 Jackson Street West at 1:45 p.m. on Monday for “suspicious circumstances.”

“Once officers arrived, they were directed to a storage locker located in the basement of the property,” police said.

The emergency disposal unit was then called.

Roads were subsequently closed in the area and the public was asked to stay away.

In an update, police said that the explosive substance “has been handled and the area has been deemed safe.”

All roads were reopened.

Police haven’t released further information.
